Why Choose MayFair Dental Associates for Sleep Apnea Therapy?

What is Sleep Apnea?

When a person has sleep apnea, they experience brief but frequent stoppages in breathing while they sleep. Most of the time, this is caused by the soft tissues in the mouth and throat relaxing into and blocking the airway. As a result, the body has to partially wake up in order to restore proper respiration, disrupting the sleep cycle over and over again. This prevents someone from getting the deep, restful sleep they need to feel awake the next day. Over time, sleep deprivation sets in, which can negatively impact someone’s quality of life and overall health.

How We Help Patients with Sleep Apnea

Sleeping pan with CPAP system

Our practice provides a treatment called oral appliance therapy, in which a patient wears a custom-made mouthguard to bed. They are shaped to fit comfortably in the mouth and slightly adjust the lower jaw forward, which helps the airway stay open throughout the night. This enables a patient to get the quality sleep they need, plus it can make them stop snoring as well. In clinical studies, oral appliance therapy has been shown to improve the sleep quality of 90% of the people who use it consistently.

When designing a patient’s oral appliance, we use CT scans of the airway to identify exactly where the blockage is occurring. This level of precision in our treatment planning ensures a good night’s rest right from the beginning.

Oral appliance therapy can also be used to help patients who are CPAP intolerant or want to try a treatment other than CPAP therapy.
